In today's digital world it is easy to access a multitude of opinions on any topic. Not only is it easy but it is also inexpensive. Exploring the ideas of others has not always been so easy but I am not yet convinced this is good. I find it frustrating to dig through the opinion heap trying to get to reliable information.
Growing up in the sixties and seventies I could depend on newspapers and television news to give me an impartial look at the day's events. Of course, this was not always the case.
When America was founded all articles written contained the opinions of just one man in most cases. Books were published and newspaper were distributed and everyone knew they were reading the opinions of one man. In fact citizens in 1776 were convinced to revolt based upon the writings of our founding fathers. For the most part they wrote as individuals and only came together to write the Declaration of Independence. For example,, Common Sense by Thomas Paine was published in 1776 and challenged the authority of the British
government and the royal monarchy. The plain language that Paine used spoke to
the common people of America and was the first work to openly ask for
independence from Great Britain.
With the invention of cheaper printing technologies and the ability of more people to read the demand for newspapers increased and over time they found they could sell more newspapers by leaving their opinion out of the news. Owners and editors still gave their opinion but it was clearly labeled and placed on the editorial pages.
This worked until everyone became a journalist with the dawning of the digital age. Now anyone can have a website, facebook page, and a twitter account to name a few of the tools available for today's journalists. I think we are in an era of transition. Getting information to people has never been easier, or cheaper but because of this we are buried in information. Separating the important from the unimportant is the task we are faced with. You might have been able to answer the question "Where should I get my news/information from?" I have not been able to answer it yet. I am still exploring the seemingly endless possibilities.
